Prevalence of Musculoskeletal Injuries in Recreational Western Dancers

Abstract
Musculoskeletal injuries are common amongst western dancers due to its high physical demanding actions. There is an increased possibility of these injuries in recreational western dancers in the adult and older adult population, i.e. above age 30. The objective of the study is to find the prevalence of most common musculoskeletal injuries for the given population using standard nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire as an outcome measure.
A cross sectional observational study was conducted among 178 recreational (1-5 hrs/week) western dancers above age 30 in Pune city. The dance forms included were salsa, hip hop, contemporary, ballet, free style, belly dancing, jazz etc. Participants who were eligible filled an annexure and completed the form including the Standard Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics including mean, standard deviation, frequency and percentage was calculated by filling the entries in excel sheets.
The results showed that out of 178 dancers, 148 dancers had an injury in atleast one part of the body which equalled 83.1 percent. The mean age was 37.92 + 6.79. The study concluded that more than half of the population reported musculoskeletal injuries highlighting the importance of early assessments and injury prevention strategies.
